Join our mission to place defibrillators in the heart of every community.

New data from London Ambulance Service reveals there are 150 neighbourhoods across the capital in greatest need of life-saving defibrillators.

A cardiac arrest is when a person’s heart stops beating and stops pumping blood and oxygen around the body. It’s a serious medical emergency and without help the person will die. Bystander intervention has a significant impact on whether a patient survives a cardiac arrest because someone near them has been able to perform CPR and use a defibrillator to help.

But new analysis from London Ambulance shows 21 neighbourhoods where there is no access to a defibrillator, and 129 neighbourhoods where there is limited access for the population nearby.

Together, we can change this!

Our campaign holds the belief that every Londoner should have the best chance of surviving an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. We envision a city where families, shopkeepers, and neighbours are trained to deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use a defibrillator confidently so they are ready to help in an emergency.

About the campaign

The London Heart Starters campaign will fundraise to ensure there are an additional 200 public-access defibrillators in unlocked cabinets where they are needed most. Our campaign uses a data-driven approach to identify defib deserts, small communities across the capital that have little to no defibrillators available to help save the life of someone having a cardiac arrest.

We pledge to work with communities to identify defibrillator guardians, install public-access defibrillators, and ensure community members are trained in the life-saving skills of CPR and feel confident to use a defibrillator.

About the data

The London Ambulance Service has a database identifying the locations of more than 9,400 defibrillators across the city. The analysis shows that there are fewest in areas with the highest levels of deprivation and poorest health outcomes.

The stark data shows that households in deprived areas are more likely to be in one of these 150 areas, with one central London borough having six times more defibrillators than those in some poorer neighbourhoods.

In doing so, we will be working directly with these communities, so that this life-saving equipment is available to everyone.
